Having read the Dorina Basarab series by Karen Chance prior to this start of the Cassie Palmer series, I think really helped me understand the whole plot and world better. I was already familiar with many of the characters, but this novel definetely helped me get a better scope on some of them.
I liked it, quite a bit. Very magically creative and though it took just over 200 pages for the Senate to tell Cassie what they wanted, it was worth it. The action was basically non stop through out the whole book, one situation rolling into the next, that you practically held your breath for half the book!
I really liked how Cassie always stood up for herself, didn't let herself get distracted from what SHE wanted/needed to get done. Gotta love a heroine that knows what she's about, even if isn't what she had wanted.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

Ooo... This looks intriguing. O.o I must add it to me "to read" list. I keep thinking I should do the Goodreads thing and really organize my reading list. I've just never gotten around to it. I guess it seems kind of daunting?
ReplyDeleteI'm reading the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher right now. It's not my usual cup of tea, but oh gods... This series is a riot a minute. I'm really liking it. :)
Also, I couldn't help but notice Robin Hobb on your bookshelf in the sidebar. I so love Robin Hobb. It seems kind of rare to come across someone else who has heard of her and read her. ^.^
I just started goodreads and I really wish I had done it sooner. I was using Amazon (and still do...but am thinking of killing 2 of my lists) to track what I wanted to read, not released books, read and what my library has available. Goodreads, however, is awesome. It's not that daunting and you can look at a specific author and the easily click if you want to read or read each book they have written. The only pain in the ass thing for me (mainly because I have over 1000+ books read) was the date/year I read those books. Some where easy (I totally remember the first book I read - Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings - and I was 12, so I got that year right)
DeleteYes, goodreads has a lot of things you can do. But I started off with my favorite authors and then just went down the line, and also used my Amazon lists to help me fill in the blanks. They also have recommendations (sorta like Amazon) which helped find more of my books. Now, I am starting to join some of the groups and see what else it is. I do love it just for the tracking of what I read (oh and having cool ass people contact you!!)
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Dresden files. Jim Butcher also has a fantasy series (if that is what you normally read??) but Dresden is one of my faves. Love the characters, the banter, the everything. I even liked the TV series that was on shortly on SyFy a few years back. Steven Brust also has a good, dry sense of humor if that is one of the things you like about this series.
Yes, Robin Hobb. See, (heehee) when I find an author I like, I tend to read ALL of their books (though it can years, depending) and I have 100 or so authors that I like. But when you're between books and waiting for more to be published, you need more authors to find and books to read. I got to the point where I would look for the thickest book I could find too. So, sorry babbling. But this is how I found Robin. I was looking for more good books, hers were thick and turned out she has some really great stories :D
You know? I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and make the Goodreads thing happen. There's no getting around it. It just sounds too awesome. Plus, what harm in recording my thoughts about some of the books on there? Although, it seems like some people take the reviews way, way serious. O.o
ReplyDeleteOH, MY GODS! You've actually seen the show! I adored it. I ran across the show before I read the books. Now that the show is on Netflix, I like putting it on just for background noise. The funny thing? I usually really dislike it when a show deviates so much from the books, but in this instance? I don't mind so much. I'm not sure if it's because they both work so well and I enjoy the contrasts, or what. I do have trouble with picturing the characters as Jim Butcher writes them, though. I keep seeing the TV show actors. And I'll definitely be looking into Steven Burst. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
Robin Hobb... yep. I ran across her in much the same way. Well, my dad and I did. We share books, so we tend to shop for them together. I think I was still in high school when I first started reading the series, and I've read it once every year to year-and-a-half since then. I think that's why I've read so few books for someone who reads as often as I do. (Although I don't read at your pace!) I reread ALL THE TIME. As much as I like finding new worlds, I frequently have to go back and visit old friends. And, given the proclivity of some of the series in regards to length, well. Re-reading can take awhile! (Robin Hobb, Robert Jordan, Jacqueline Carey...)
At any rate. I agree. Great stories. :) I'm looking forward to the next Dragon Keeper Chronicles book. I should really look into when that's coming out...
I am happy with Goodreads - I am calming down on my obsession (sort of) - I have been good about reviewing books I am reading this year and I will hopefully go back to the books I've already read and do that as well. It just might take me a decade. And yeah, some people trip out over reviews but I have always taken everything with a grain of salt. It's *that* persons opinion and that's fine. And if someone doesn't like what I write, so what.
DeleteYes, loved the show!! I was really really pissed when they cancelled!! I do the exact same thing, I totally have the TV show characters in my head when I read. Which can get wonky!! And then if I see said characters on ANOTHER show I wig out, because I'm all like, but but but THAT'S HARRY!!
If you need more authors to read, just let me know. I have about 100 or so favorites. Or all kinds of genres :) Shocking I know ;)
I have had a hard time re-reading books *unless* it's been about 5 years since I read the book. The problem is I remember too many of details and I get annoyed because I know what's going to happen. I was able to re-read some of Robert Jordans (gods, back in the early 2000's) because book 6 or 7 came out so I re-read books 3-5 type of thing. That is awesome that you can re-read though, I almost wish I could more often. I'd save money for one thing (though the library is my bestest bestest friend).
Oh, Blood of Dragons (the Rain Wilds Chronicles) is coming out in April. It's #4 and said to be her last one of this series. I still need to read #3 (yes my library has it) but I have several books to read 1st. Oh, the stresses of reading...LOL
