During my therapy session last night, we talked in part about my reading and what it means to me. I don't know how it can affects others, at least for the most part.
I know at what age I got truly interested in reading. I was 12 years old, living in San Fernando Valley in Southern California. I was in 6th grade. My sister had just read this book and said I should read it. It was Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings. It was also a revelation.
At this point in my young life, I was happy and miserable at the same time. I was super tall for my age (and then stopped growing for several years) so the start of middle school wasn't as bad as it could have been. School life really wasn't the issue, home was. Both my brothers were in and out, they were drug addicts and gods only knew when/where/what they were working (though then it was mostly construction), my sister starting high school, so world of difference between us there, Jean (aka mother) was working in South Central LA as a teacher on emergency credentials. We were Mormon, which meant church on Sundays, baby sitting and pretending my Dad was "working" somewhere in Arizona while we barely surviving. Don't get me wrong, the church helped us like you could not believe in those years. It was hard because we could never talk about what was really going on and pretend everything was normal, ok, nothing to worry about. Not to mention my mother was not exactly the best at parenting.
We had 3 dogs, 2 females and 1 male, that we breed. This helped keep us afloat, because we would get $400+ per puppy (Bichons). I hated the boy dog, Fred, though. He was too fucking smart and a total ass. We had several cats, which Jean named after her fave actor at the time, Sylvester Stallone - so we had Rocky, Rambo and I think Sylvester. Rocky wasn't quite right in the head (different story, different post)
Ok, so onto why I got so into reading. Back then, and for many years, it was an escape. Not just any escape either, it was safe. Safe to be close to the characters, to live through them, experience what they did and feel what they did. To learn - so many things. My life really wasn't that bad and could have been so much worse. I was lucky to be living during the times that women have value and to know it's ok to fight for that value. To know that they are good people, bad people, and people in between. It was ok to be happy, angry, fight for what you believed in, to protect others and yourself. It was ok to be yourself.
It gave me peace. It helped me figure out who I wanted to be, and not just succumb to same old shit everyone else did.
As I grew up and older, I didn't take those qualities as much because I didn't need them as much. Reading then challenged me, to think more and deeper. It gave me pleasure and stress relief. It gave me reasons to ignore assholes and to not take some things personally. It gave me perspective.
There is nothing quite like reading a novel that ramped you up so much, broke your heart along the way and then ended so satisifying you just wanted to bask for a little while in the thoughts of it. (Melanie Rawn's Sunrunner series comes to mind)
And as I became an adult, working and paying bills, reading became more and less at the same time. I didn't always have the resources to buy books, which meant they became that much more valuable in my mind set. I do wish I was more aware of the library systems back then!! I also didn't have as much time to read. So I would read in chunks of time, mainly on the weekends or later in the evenings. Then came marriage and with marriage you totally forget about everything and everyone else for a time :^D
But reading, it's certainly changed me, helped me grow and just BE as a person.
How I read books now, is much different from how I started out. Now, it's pleasure and me time. Sure, there are sometimes it's a stress relief from work, or a brief glimpse of a different reality (because that violence isn't as close to home as the news on TV) but for the most part, it's because I enjoy the story. Some stories are amazing and I love getting that rush off a good plot/plots. I love getting pulled into something, some amazing world or characters that I wish I knew in real life or even the humor behind the banter going on. Now, I am entering the book, whereas before the good was a gateway to someplace else.
I am not using the books to escape from an unhappy life, not anymore. I am reading a good story. Some books and characters I get more attached to, which means their authors are the ones I keep watch out for more (and ok, it's like 100 authors at this point...). I just love reading and the joy it brings me.

Passive Aggressive Part 2
Wow, I posted about this lovely and fun subject in January of 2011. I thought it'd be nice to offer up a refresher and see what new information is out there now...
If you want to read my original post, please check it out here
I realize most of us, especially in relationships, will show passive aggressive traits at some point. When we get so angry and don't want to really hurt the other person, we might instead do it in a not so obvious way. Personally, when I have done this I was overt about it. And I know that with me personally, I tend to do this when I am still processing something in my head and know I'm upset but unable to comunicate that. It can be amazing that a simple little sentence or two, like "You really pissed me off by saying xyz..." can be so hard to verbalize.
No one is perfect, we're all working on things, but communication is key.
Below are some things I found on the net (not my written words) so please see the resources for where I gathered this info.
Signs/Examples of Passive Aggressive behavior:
Consequences of Passive Aggressive Behaviour
Passive Aggressive Behavior Is a Habit
Living with the Passive-Aggressive Man **This could also apply to women**
NOTE: This is the "condensed" version. For the expanded version please see Dr. Wetzler's book, pages 35-37......
And if I could, I would re-post the entire blog about:
I think that if you realize that you have Passive Aggressive as a personality trait, counseling would be the first place to start.

No one is perfect, we're all working on things, but communication is key.
Below are some things I found on the net (not my written words) so please see the resources for where I gathered this info.
Signs/Examples of Passive Aggressive behavior:
Non-Communication when there is clearly something problematic to discuss
Avoiding/Ignoring when you are so angry that you feel you cannot speak calmly
Evading problems and issues, burying an angry head in the sand
Procrastinating intentionally putting off important tasks for less important ones
Obstructing deliberately stalling or preventing an event or process of change
Fear of Competition Avoiding situations where one party will be seen as better at something
Ambiguity Being cryptic, unclear, not fully engaging in conversations
Sulking Being silent, morose, sullen and resentful in order to get attention or sympathy.
Chronic Lateness A way to put you in control over others and their expectations
Chronic Forgetting Shows a blatant disrespect and disregard for others to punish in some way
Fear of Intimacy Often there can be trust issues with passive aggressive people and guarding against becoming too intimately involved or attached will be a way for them to feel in control of the relationship
Making Excuses Always coming up with reasons for not doing things
Victimisation Unable to look at their own part in a situation will turn the tables to become the victim and will behave like one
Self-Pity the poor me scenario
Blaming others for situations rather than being able to take responsibility for your own actions or being able to take an objective view of the situation as a whole.
Withholding usual behaviours or roles for example sex, cooking and cleaning or making cups of tea, running a bath etc. all to reinforce an already unclear message to the other party
Learned Helplessness where a person continually acts like they can’t help themselves – deliberately doing a poor job of something for which they are often explicitly responsible
Consequences of Passive Aggressive Behaviour
In being passive aggressive you are not giving yourself or others an opportunity to listen to what you think or feel
When on the receiving end of passive aggression, you can feel confused, upset, offended, guilty and frustrated. You may think you’ve done something wrong, but have no clear idea what it was
It avoids communication in a very negative way
It creates insecurity in all parties
It creates a bad atmosphere between people
It is a form of conflict where either both or one party cannot engage sensibly in the issues
It avoids the real issues
It creates negative feelings and resentments in an unassertive way
In marriages, husbands and wives often use passive aggressive behavior as the path of least resistance. In other words, a person wants to say "no" to a request, but realizes that doing so will likely result in an immediate disagreement or confrontation. To avoid the temporary unpleasantness, a partner verbally agrees to a request but behaviorally delays its completion or-more crafty yet-carries out the task according to unacceptable standards in hopes of not being asked to carry out the request in the future. Fortunately, situation-specific passive aggressive behavior in a marriage, though infuriating in the moment, is usually quite manageable when confronted directly and consistently.
Passive Aggressive Behavior Is a Habit
For some, passive aggressive behavior is not just a situational choice, but rather a deeply ingrained personality type. When a child is raised in an environment in which the expression of angry feelings is not tolerated, he learns to use indirect, passive aggressive means to express himself. In marriage, this adult child overgeneralizes and responds to his spouse as if she were the parent who stifled his emotional expression. Genuinely-loved partners become undeserving targets of ingrained passive aggressive habits and are especially hurt, confused, and frustrated to receive it. The relationship is often brought to the boiling point.
Another aspect that makes passive aggression particularly toxic in a marriage is how it is modeled to the next generation. Children of passive aggressive parents learn the indirect expression of anger as a way of life. They grow up with the belief that "anger = bad" and that hiding anger is the right, healthy, proper thing to do. Chronic passive aggression can be just as damaging to a marriage and family as outward aggression and requires focused efforts at long-term behavioral change.
Living with the Passive-Aggressive Man **This could also apply to women**
NOTE: This is the "condensed" version. For the expanded version please see Dr. Wetzler's book, pages 35-37......
FEAR OF DEPENDENCY - Unsure of his autonomy & afraid of being alone, he fights his dependency needs - usually by trying to control you.
FEAR OF INTIMACY - Guarded & often mistrusful, he is reluctant to show his emotional fragility. He's often out of touch with his feelings, reflexively denying feelings he thinks will "trap" or reveal him, like love. He picks fights to create distance.
FEAR OF COMPETITION - Feeling inadequate, he is unable to compete with other men in work and love. He may operate either as a self-sabotaging wimp with a pattern of failure, or he'll be the tyrant, setting himself up as unassailable and perfect, needing to eliminate any threat to his power.
OBSTRUCTIONISM - Just tell a p/a man what you want, no matter how small, and he may promise to get it for you. But he won't say when, and he"ll do it deliberately slowly just to frustrate you. Maybe he won't comply at all. He blocks any real progress he sees to your getting your way.
FOSTERING CHAOS - The p/a man prefers to leave the puzzle incomplete, the job undone.
FEELING VICTIMIZED - The p/a man protests that others unfairly accuse him rather than owning up to his own misdeeds. To remain above reporach, he sets himself up as the apparently hapless, innocent victim of your excessive demands and tirades.
MAKING EXCUSES & LYING - The p/a man reaches as far as he can to fabricate excuses for not fulfilling promises. As a way of withholding information, affirmation or love - to have power over you - the p/a man may choose to make up a story rather than give you a straight answer.
PROCRASTINATION - The p/a man has an odd sense of time - he believes that deadlines don't exist for him.
CHRONIC LATENESS & FORGETFULNESS - One of the most infuriating & inconsiderate of all p/a traits is his inability to arrive on time. By keeping you waiting, he sets the ground rules of the relationship. And his selective forgetting - used only when he wants to avoid an obligation.
AMBIGUITY - He is master of mixed messages and sitting on fences. When he tells you something, you may still walk away wondering if he actually said yes or no.
SULKING - Feeling put upon when he is unable to live up to his promises or obligations, the p/a man retreats from pressures around him and sulks, pouts and withdraws.
A passive-aggressive man won't have every single one of these traits, but he'll have many of them. He may have other traits as well, which are not passive-aggressive.
And if I could, I would re-post the entire blog about:

Book Review: Free Fall (Retrievers, #5) by Laura Anne Gilman
Free Fall by Laura Anne GilmanMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Free Fall was better than the previous book in this Retrievers series. It brought back some of that action, killer attitudes and more focus. It had some intense moments, life changing moments for Wren that really gave her character a serious mind twist that effects her the rest of the book. It was one of those things though, that should effect someone.
The relationship drama between Wren and Sergei is there, it's just not the main show, which was nice. It did feel a bit more realistic, as did the friendship thats growing with P.B.
The writing in this novel was much better than the last, the plots felt more directed and there was tension so that you kept on reading to find out what in the world is going on and going to happen. You can feel the build up in this book and it doesn't disappoint.

Book Review: The Seduction of Elliot McBride by Jennifer Ashley
The Seduction of Elliot McBride by Jennifer AshleyMy rating: 2 of 5 stars
Overall, I like this series, Highland Pleasures. I just didn't feel that book was all that exciting. There was not as much romance, little history on whatever romantic feelings the 2 lead characters felt for each other. And
Elliot, I felt for the poor man but how many times did we need to be reminded of his PTSD charactistics in any given chapter? I felt like I was re-reading the same sections over and over in some cases with that.
I actually enjoyed more of some of the secondary characters than the leads. Elliot's uncle was a hoot.
It was an easy but plain read for me. It's a good book to pass the time but I could have skipped it and been just a happy reading something that caught my imagination more.

Novellas vs Books
I've been noticing that a lot of authors that I like publishing Novella's. It's harder for me to get into these works because of the cost. If they were priced right, I would probably purchase them.
Case in point, Neferet's Curse: A House of Night Novella by P.C. Cast. P.C. Cast is well known author and published a slew of books.
This Novella is 160 pages and Amazon has it "on sale" for $10.39 as of today. The retail pricing is $12.99
See, if a normal paperback book is $7.99 and is on average 350 pages, that's $.0228 per page. So, a Novella would be $ 3.65 for the 160 pages like the one from P.C. Cast. Of course, I have no idea how they calculate the price, but coming from a logical/data stand point, it seems a little more fair. A great example is Feral Magic by Robin D. Owens (one of my favorite authors) who has also writtens tons of books. Her Novella is 96 pages and is only $2.99 for the Kindle version. That's $.0311 per page. This one I will probably end of getting once I have some of my other books read.
What I'm say is that if authors want more readers, more sales, then their publishers need to be a bit more realistic. The pricing structure needs to be amended to something us readers can afford to pay for these smaller installments that we would like to read. And yes, of course that means that the authors would get less per sale - but maybe it would even out in the end??
Now I'm not saying that authors don't have a lot of stress, it's not easy to be creative and write well. I know that they have dead lines and normal every day life as well. And I would totally love to read many of the novella's that I am seeing published lately.
To me, especially with how fucked up the economy has been for the last several years, I have been very careful (aka frugal) in my book purchases. I use my local (and state wide) library system for most of my reading needs. When I do purchase books, I try to get the most bang for my buck. I will buy used books through Amazon (those priced less than $1.00 and have $3.99 shipping or free shipping) or locally at Wonder Books. For instance, I just book 7 books for $28.86 which is an average of $4.12 per book and that was because there was some tax added in. My other criteria are: Most amount of pages, most recently related books read, favorite authors, something I've been waiting & wanting to read.
Also, it's not very often I buy hard backs anymore, unless I can get them on sale or 2nd hand and a whole lot less in price. Unless it's a book that has a ton of pages and is one of my favorite authors and I've been dying to read it. Though, now that I have a Kindle Fire, I will look at the Kindle price and might get it that way. Or I will wait.
I honestly doubt it's the writer/author that's putting the price on these things. It's the publisher and merchant. They need to be shaken so that their sense or reality can be resettled into their brains. That way we can all win. Less price = more sales = happy readers = more sales = more $$ for author/publisher/merchant. At least, that's my theory and opinion. I could be wrong...

Book Review: The Never King by George Tyson
The Never King by George TysonMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
4.75 stars
This is a very unique novel.
Using a composition of spy themes, fantasy, Arthurian genre, and to be honest probably a multitude of others - the author expertly breathes life into this story and the characters. It was intriguing, intricate and I did not know what to expect next while reading it. You don't get lost, even though so much is going on and situations will just pop into a scene, but it's like a potato chip - you can never just have one. You have to keep reading just to see what happens next. It was exciting to read as the author continuously pulls you further into the story.
This is an exquisitely well written novel. The concept is amazing, I loved how so many elements got blended but not dissipated at all.
You can tell there is room for the story to continue, and the way it was written you want to read what is next.

I really liked Scent of Magic.
Like the previous book in this series, Touch Of Power, the characters, the multi-plots going on, the magic and the world building are all just incredible. The author is an amazing writer.
It was a great combination of relationships (with a hint of love), action and good old fantasy. I think one of favorite aspects of this series are the Death and Peace Lilies. There is something about them that really intrigues me.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next novel.
Highly recommend

Book Review: Another Kind of Dead by Kelly Meding
Another Kind of Dead by Kelly MedingMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a seriously fast paced, moving in crazy directions and non stop action. It did not stop. Granted, this meant there wasn't as much character/character relationship development as a whole. It was just this intense gut twisting story line.
I do think that Evy needs to get in shape or stop whining about. Though I think she's a bit softer/nicer in this book compared to previous ones. Still sharp and fiesty, but now with a hint of a smile. I would love it if Wyatt had a more umph to him.
Overall, it was a great installment in the Dreg series. I can't wait to read the next one!

Book Review: My Ruthless Prince by Gaelen Foley
My Ruthless Prince by Gaelen FoleyMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I did like this book, though I must say this novel frustrated me.
I wasn't as happy with Emily, the lead female character, because she was so - well she was basically a door mat - for a lot of this. Yes, she would do anything and everything for Drake, and I get that she was completely devoted to him. I just wished that she was a stronger person for herself as well.
Drake wasn't whole and so I can see where he would have a hard time dealing with any emotions, but it was almost a little much. Drake was playing a deep game in this novel, some of which it seemed like he wasn't even sure himself which way things would go. I actually liked that part of it.
It was well written, you certainly don't get bored with this novel (or even this series) but this book felt like it was held back a notch. I wanted something more from the couple, a deeper spark that really ignited things.
I think my favorite part was the end, where everything *luckily* worked out. I liked that you weren't sure and it was a little bit touch and go. And there will be consequences for many of the characters.

Book Review: Cold Days: A Novel of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Cold Days by Jim ButcherMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Dresden Files has been one of my favorite series for a long while.
Cold Days does not disappoint in any way. It was FULL of the Awesome, it was amazing and I might actually be able to read it a second time (which doesn't typically happen for me). Honestly, it was brilliant. I never quite know how Jim Butcher is going twist things and throw something in from left field that then totally makes the whole situation expand and explode and just get intensly more complicated. Love it.
The humor, the emotional smack downs, and well just everything was absolutely and incredibly divine in this novel. I want MORE. I wish I had the words to really convey how much I loved this book.

Book Review: Steel's Edge by Ilona Andrews
Steel's Edge by Ilona AndrewsMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am disappointed that there will not be any more Edge books, because I have really enjoyed this series and the characters within it. Though I am holding out hope that there might be an off shoot of the series.
Ilona Andrew's world building skills are amazing. In this series, the Edge is unique and in a unusual position. It's like a dumping ground and spring board at the same time. The characters you want in your own family and when you read this series/book you *want to know* what happens.
As this is the last book, the author did end it on a positive note, and even though I still want to know what is going to happens to certain characters.
It was full of action, multiple plots and situations (which I love) and you don't always know what is going to come of it, that is until it all comes together and you can breath once more.

Book Review: Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLeanMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was a deliciously good read. Fun, witty & smart, full of romance. And compelling. You feel compelled to read the book from start to finish, as soon as you pick it up.
It's a sweet and easy read and not complicated in the way some novels are. And it's nice to have a lead character, Callie, be utterly perfect in all ways physically. All the characters, lead and secondary, were well written. The story was unique compared to the other novels I've read in this genre.
Totally recommend for those who love (or like or haven't even read it before) romance!

Book Review: The Dark-Eyes War by David B. Coe
The Dark-Eyes' War by David B. CoeMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I think this would have been a better read for me if I was able to read it not too long after reading the 2nd book in this series. It took me a few moments to get really caught up in the story line again.
Dark-Eyes War was the final book in this series. I do love how Coe is able to build worlds, make them real and have everthing fall into place. His characters always are well written, have depth and the relationships well worked out. I do wish this particular trilogy were a bit more complex like his other series. For me, his writing is even better the more complicated it gets!! That would have been a 4-5 star for me.
Highly recommend this author and series for those who enjoy fantasy that's original. Also recommend to read his Winds of the Forelands series first though.

Book Review: Lord's Fall by Thea Harrison
Lord's Fall by Thea HarrisonMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really, really liked this book.
It was fast paced, funny, action packed and full of sexy-ness.
Pia and Dragos are learning, together. Gaining understanding, balance in their relationship which I appreciated. I loved how Pia is assertive and in better control. I really enjoyed Dragos thinking ahead more because of Pia, and how things are changing due to Peanut!!
I do wish there were more scenes with the Sentinel Games. There were, overall, good twists and turns in the story, suspense until the very end. It was well worth reading and waiting for.
I am really looking forward to the next release in the Elder Series.

Book Review: The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) by Terry Goodkind
The First Confessor by Terry GoodkindMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is basically the Prequel to his Sword of Truth series. It was also a seriously incredible read.
The story was intriguing, the characters such a good blend that you fell into the book and became part of it along with them. I could not put it down. I didn't want this book to end. I want more!
Terry Goodkind showed he is a master story teller once again in this novel. He draws you in and hooks you on the amazingly entertaining and moving story and you can't but help become wrapped up and woven into it.
This is the type of book that makes you want to read more.

Book Review: Spell of the Highlander by Karen Marie Moning
Spell of the Highlander by Karen Marie MoningMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I actually read this book first, out of the series, by accident. Even though I could tell that there were some history with the other characters, it certainly didn't take away from this story.
The leading female character, Jesse St. James, strong-independent-smart, but also annoying. The leading male character, Cian, is a 9th century somewhat cave man-ish but hunky male. I liked how he was selfless about what needed to be done, but not how he sometimes treated Jesse.
I did like the fact that Jesse was immune to his and others magical charms. That part of the plot worked for me and I think made the story more interesting.
It was an easy, magical romantic read with some action thrown in. It didn't seem like an amazingly written must be read book, but it was very enjoyable.
Now I just need to read the rest of the series.

Book Review: My Scandalous Viscount (Inferno Series) by Gaelen Foley
My Scandalous Viscount by Gaelen FoleyMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
This historical romance was both good and bad.
The Good: Closure in my many ways in the series (but still more to come!!). Finally get these 2 main characters into the marriage bed. The author writes well - she does get you drawn into the story. The secondary characters are interesting and you want to hear about them.
The Bad: The trust issues between Beau and Carissa really bugged me. This caused their relationship to suffer (as trust issues always will) and it was just so frustrating that I wanted to scream or spank them until they got a clue. Also, it felt like the Inferno Club should have been more protected/protected it's own for what it represents in the series.
The Eh: This particular book felt a little bit predictable. It was great to get some of the characters relationships in order but it felt just like a place holder in the series.
I do like the Inferno Club series, it's intriguing, funny, well written and you have romance and danger. Who could want more.

Book Review: Princess of the Silver Woods by Jessica Day George
Princess of the Silver Woods by Jessica Day GeorgeMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was the third and final book in the Princess series by Jessica Day George.
I have really enjoyed this series, enchanted by the story line and characters. It was an easy read, something for those lazy days where you don't want to think too hard but still really enjoy what you're reading.
It was very well written, as most of her novels have been. It was neat how it incorporated aspects from classic stories like Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood, perfecting blending it into her Princess story.
All loose ends were stitched up nicely, though I still wonder how/what happened to those living in Under Stone at the end.
Highly recommend this book and series for anyone in the mood for an easy and quick read - it's a lovely, innocent and adventurous Princess story.

Book Review: Soul Sisters by Janiera Eldridge
Soul Sisters by Janiera EldridgeMy rating: 2 of 5 stars
**I received this book in exchange for an honest review via GoodReads**
I was really excited to receive this book, based on the synopsis and some of what others have stated in their reviews.
The idea behind the story I really liked. It's unique and has quite a lot of potential to be a truly impacting story for the Vampire genre of paranormal books.
However, how it was presented left me wanting. If it had a little more time in development, where it could have been fine tuned and had more character/character relationship depth it would have rocked 5 stars easily.
This book was hard for me to read through, mainly I kept hoping that the writer was going to more articulate with Ani and Dana (the main characters), especially since they had been around for over a 100 years. I was expecting them to be sharper and stronger characters.
I am hoping that her next novel in this series shows up on the promise that this first one is hinting at.

Yummy Products
I was thinking about my Dad this morning so I decided to check and see if Amazon has any of his products listed.
Yes, yes it does. Granted it's going through one of the customers he sells to, I don't care, I just think it's cool they are listed :)
Here are a few that I use (ok I use a lot of his shit) -

The B-Healthy is awesome, especially if you have PCOS.
Love me the Facial Wash, I have sensitive skin and this stuff keeps it clear.
I like the Age Defying lotion, not because it's age defying so much, but the orange scent makes me think of summer and happy thoughts. Plus, this stuff is thick and absorbs into my skin like nothing. Which is really really good because the winter air here is DRY DRY DRY and I need some damn moisturizer!!

Book Review: Magic on the Line by Devon Monk
Magic on the Line by Devon MonkMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
More like 4.5 Stars
I want to say that so far of this series this has been one of my favorites.
Yes, Zay has changed. Yes, Allie is changing. To be honest, most of the characters are becoming more complex, even Alli's Dad. I think these things are expected and I would be more upset if the characters didn't change! And I totally feel for them all because there is no rest for the wicked in this series. It has been one major mojo after another, but this is why we read books - the thrill of the story. And this story is getting bigger, deeper and more impacting.
I am liking the series the more I read it. Can't wait to get my hands on the next installment.

Stainless Steel vs. Non Stick - Part 1
We currently have Non Stick pots and pans.
The (now Ex-)husband knows that when we need to buy new ones (which will be sooner rather than later) and I am pretty sure I want the Stainless Steel set. I have been looking into this for a quite a while now, before the holidays even.
It's a good investment since it will last a lifetime. Health wise, studies are showing the Non Stick/Teflon has fumes that aren't the healthiest, plus I hate how the non stick coating is flaking off on our pans right now.
I know some people who have mostly Stainless Steel but will keep 1 - 10" skillet that is Non Stick for things like eggs or whatever requires a more delicate cooking touch. All I wonder with that is, people 30 years ago didn't really have this Non stick option, and they were able to cook eggs and whatnot (chefs, I'm sure, did all kinds of delicate cooking miracles) so do I really need to even keep that 1 skillet?
I do have 1 cast iron skillet. Maybe I should start using that for now instead of my non stick...hmmm...
I also think I will do a little bit more research before I try to convince the (now Ex-)husband about this investment.

Book Review: Primal Law by J.D. Tyler
Primal Law by J.D. TylerMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
First, I must say that to me this author and story line has a lot of potential. I will be reading the rest of this series, but I am hoping that the both gain more depth as it goes on.
This book seemed to move a little too fast in some ways. I felt rushed reading it, and then would hit a spot with details that showed how much more it could have been all the way through.
In part, it was harder for me to accept that Kira just went so easily with everything that happened, coming from a background with no paranormal history. That part was a hard sell. I also wish there was a bit more of the story developed before the characters were jumping into bed with each other. A little more tension and pull first. That antipation would have helped increase the enjoyment, as would have a litle bit more character development.
Overall, it wasn't bad, it wasn't awesome, but it good enough I want to see what happens with the series!

Book Review: Magic on the Hunt by Devon Monk
Magic on the Hunt by Devon MonkMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Book 6 of the Allie Beckstrom is starting to finally get closer to the nut of this series. You learn more about what's really been going on and how what was thought as the big picture, well, it wasn't quite big enough!
I like how Allie seems to be finally be growing deeper as a character. She's not as whiny and always hating on life, she's more a team player and even though she still gets the crap beaten out of her, it's not all about her in this segment.
There is a lot of really good tension, change and action in this novel. I feel like it's better than #5 in this series. Yes, Allie still has a lot of questions and she's slightly behind the curve on the history of the Authority, but there is better fluency between her and the other characters.
I also loved reading more about Shame and Terric. Personally, I am a bit in love with Shame's character.
Overall, I am more excited to read the rest of the novels in this series now :) This was a great kick it up a notch book!

Book Review: Touch the Dark by Karen Chance
Touch the Dark by Karen ChanceMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Having read the Dorina Basarab series by Karen Chance prior to this start of the Cassie Palmer series, I think really helped me understand the whole plot and world better. I was already familiar with many of the characters, but this novel definetely helped me get a better scope on some of them.
I liked it, quite a bit. Very magically creative and though it took just over 200 pages for the Senate to tell Cassie what they wanted, it was worth it. The action was basically non stop through out the whole book, one situation rolling into the next, that you practically held your breath for half the book!
I really liked how Cassie always stood up for herself, didn't let herself get distracted from what SHE wanted/needed to get done. Gotta love a heroine that knows what she's about, even if isn't what she had wanted.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

Book review - Deerskin by Robin McKinley
I am in the process of updating my Goodreads (see, I have over 1,000 books read and I need to associate what date I've read them so that my stats update - fun times) and just had to write a quick review of this book.
Deerskin by Robin McKinley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book was intense. In that, it was so incredibly powerful and painful and amazing. I didn't think I was going to love this book the way I do. Perhaps this book is not quite for everyone because it is so gutwrenching and has dark tones to it. However, I would recommend it to any and all of my friends because it is so profound.
It is an emotional read, one that you find at the end that you realize how incredible this book is.

What I'm Reading Now
Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, Book 1) by Karen Chance
I've read other books by Karen Chance, like Midnight's Daughter and Fury's Kiss, so I know I like the author and her style of writing. I also know that the Cassandra Palmer series has at least 5 books in it and another on the way, so I am hoping that I like it. That way I can alternate between Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom series and this one for a while without getting bored (and of course intermixed with other authors/books as well!)
Just started reading this last night so I'm only like 30 pages in.

He would sell his warrior soul to possess her. . . .This is a straight forward romance, with only a hint of Fae or Magick. The plot(s) were not too complicated, but the characters were well written, if not thoroughly deep, and I think I liked the supporting characters a little bit better than the 2 main ones. Adam Black, for instance, who wears many masks, was interesting and intriguing and you just know that he's something more. Lydia, Hawk's mother, feels like she's got some history and more to her character. And of course the main characters, Hawk and Adrienne, were lovely and compelling and witty. I loved the banter between all the characters.
An alluring laird...
He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart—until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length—but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.
A prisoner in time...
She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side. . . .
Overall, it was well written, an easy but lovely romance.

I accidently read the most recent of this series, without reading any of the prior books. I hate it when I do that. I could tell I was missing some of the character insights, but it was still a really good book...So, I decided to start from the top :) Thankfully I am pull these books from my local and state library, which makes this easier and cheaper.
Just starting this book today :) Hopefully I will be able to finish it in a couple days.

This series has been such a sweet one, with many different love situations, some sexy ones to boot. These books are always an easy read for me. Her plots are deep but not too complicated, the characters always real enough to believe (especially for someone who is used to sinking into a new world) and I love how she incorporates Fam's (animals) into her stories. Her books always make me feel good. Someone had said this was the last book in the series, but I don't believe that's accurate. Especially since in her Blog she mentioned one called Heart Fortune. Plus, there are too many stories left to be written about this world!! You can read this book as a stand alone, but I think reading the previous ones make it better.

The Epidemic of Squeaky Shoes
I am not sure if I am jinxed somehow or if it's the way I wear shoes or walk or what.
It seems that no matter if it's heels, boots, snow boots, flats, sandals or sneakers - I end up with shoes that squeak when I walk.
I hate that.
O.M.F.G - I am an auditory person already and it just makes me cringe when I hear those squeaks. Not to mention, everyone I work/walk by hears it as well and that's sorta embarrassing.
Ugh.
I get new shoes and at first things are fine. Then a few weeks or months into wearing them, the inevitable sounds happen.
These shoes can just bite me.
I need to go shoe shopping again soon though. I also wore out a pair of boots heels...and have worn through the soft fuzzy stuff inside my snow boots...
I also need to shave my legs, but that's another whole issue.

Nioxin - For Thinning Hair
Ok, so I purchased some of this based on it working for others on http://www.soulcysters.net/ in the hopes that it will ACTUALLY work.
Because let me tell, thinning and male pattern balding is the most Depressing.Thing.Ever
For the last few years, my widow peaks (is that even the correct term) were noticeably going bald and I thought it was because I always kept my hair in a pony tail. So, I've been trying to do that less and even got bangs to see if it could help hide that.
Then I got diagnosed with PCOS and found that is one of the symptoms (one of many that I have and didn't realize it - so very sad) and was prescribed Metformin. Well, then my hair thinning got worse because now you can see my scalp through my bangs and front part of my head. This equals = DEPRESSION for me, because damn, I only a few assets and one of those is my pretty long brown wavy hair. UGH.
Seriously, I was pulling handfuls of hair out during my shower - gross AND depressing. Not to mention it's no fun cleaning out the drain every week :(
So, I started reading and researching (shock) and saw that some people had success with Nioxin and Biotin (a supplement) and also that Metformin can cause your B vitamins to run away from the scary med. B Vitamins are SUPER important for hair and nails.
I promptly ordered 'B-Healthy' from Answers From Nature (who has, btw, the best stuff ever!). And waited for that to come in. (which was super freaking fast!!)
I also ordered Nioxin from Amazon.com. I went to Nioxin's website (here) and was able to do a web chat and ask some questions - like:
"Does this work for women with PCOS" YES
"How long does it take for women with PCOS" 2-3 Months (as compared to about 1 month for women without PCOS)
I did their little on line questionnaire to help determine which one to pick and then headed over to Amazon.com to see what they had (btw, I LOVE shopping of Amazon because it's easy and they usually have things I want and need).
I had thought about ordering the starter kit, but like I said I have LONG hair and that usually consume more shampoo and conditioner than short (when wet it goes to my lower back). So I ordered the following:
Nioxin Cleanser, System 2 (Fine/Untreated/Noticeably Thinning) 8.5 Oz
Nioxin Scalp Therapy (this is conditioner), System 2 (Fine/Untreated/Noticeably Thinning) 8.5 Oz
Nioxin System 2 Scalp Treatment (this is a foam) 6.8 Oz

So, once these came in (this is before I started taking my new B Healthy vitamins, they came in before but I like to start off a new week with all my vitamins in order - am OCD like that!) I checked my hair and should have taken a picture - but that itself was depressing and so if I did notice changes I didn't want to be reminded of my balding head.
Well, let me tell you.
I wash my hair daily. I use the cleanser, rinse, use the conditioner and basically paste it in focusing on my front scalp and sides and then doing the rest of my scalp and hair. I leave it in for a good 3 or more minutes (I brush my teeth, then wash face and body) and then rinse it out.
I use the Scalp Treatment (the foam) using every other day. Because, damn that stuff is like super freaking hold mousse! Those days I just usually keep my hair back!
Within the first 1.5 weeks (WEEKS not MONTHS) I saw little baby hairs growing in! NO SHIT. I showed my coworker (who also has PCOS and thinning hair) and she had seen it before I started using this stuff! She saw the difference (YEAH! It was NOT my imagination!!).
My left balding spot was doing better so I made sure the next few days to focus on both more. Now my right balding spot has hairs growing in! AND my bangs area also has fine little hairs! OH MY FUCKING GOD - THIS STUFF WORKS!
Can we say ELATED!!!
So, this is working, I don't care that it's expensive as shit because THIS IS MY FUCKING HAIR!!! And Self Esteem.
I decided to buy some Biotin supplements, (also from Amazon) because one of the ingredients in Nioxin is Biotin and you know what? I think it couldn't hurt! And I am hoping that if I ever can't afford this shampoo/conditioner/foam, then at least I should have something else going on!
I have started my B-Healthy vitamins as well. Yeah!!
Life is finally starting to get a little bit better!

My addictions
Reading and... Dragon Cave.
I have got to say it, I am really addicted to these pixels. I spent quite a few minutes continously refreshing the Abandoned page and scooping up enough eggs to lock every one of my family's scrolls. I have donated 2 eggs (which were inbred, ok, I know they are PIXELS, but still, am sorta picky about lineages so...) to whoever gets them first on a facebook fan page.
I love me some Dragon Cave! Plus, it's FREE.
I will be planning out how to hatch these eggs fast enough to scroll lock everyone once again on Halloween Day with the new Halloween Dragon Eggs. And then before the time is up, hopefully breed some more of past Halloween Dragons to score even more eggs.

Inositol Side Effects
Inositol is POSSIBLY SAFE for most adults. It can cause nausea, tiredness, headache, and dizziness.
Nausea
Fatigue
Headaches
Dizziness.
There are a few less common, but more serious, inositol side effects that you should report to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
Worsening of bipolar disorder (although this was reported in only one case and may have been caused by other factors)
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
Itching
Hives
A rash
Wheezing
Difficulty breathing
Swelling of the mouth or throat.
Some preliminary results of studies on high-dose inositol supplements show promising results for people suffering from problems such as bulimia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, agoraphobia, and unipolar and bipolar depression.[18][19][20][21]
In a single double-blind study on 13 patients, Myo-inositol (18 grams daily) has been found to reduce the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) significantly, with effectiveness equal to SSRIs and virtually without side-effects.[22] In a double-blind, controlled trial, myo-inositol (18 grams daily) was superior to fluvoxamine for decreasing the number of panic attacks and other side-effects.[20]
Patients suffering from clinical depression, in general, have decreased levels of inositol in their cerebrospinal fluid.[18][19] A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of depressed patients showed that a high dose of inositol (12 grams daily) resulted in significant improvement of symptoms, with no changes noted in liver, kidney, or hematological function.[18][19][21] A meta-analysis of randomized trials of inositol for depression was not able to determine if inositol is of benefit.[23]

Testamonials and threads on Myo-Inositol (there are more on soulcysters.net, but you need to check them out!)
http://forums.obgyn.net/pcos/PCOS.0004/0625.html
What is the best dose for Myo-Inositol?
The studies seem to be based on 2,000 mg or 4,000 mg. While there was one study on 200 mg, I recomend the 2 or 4,ooo mg dose for extra insurance that you will get all the benefits of Myo-I. Starting with 1,000 mg and gradually working your way up to the dose you choose is a good way to do it.
If your BMI is above 37, you will probably need higher doses than 4,000 mg.
Where can I purchase Myo-Inositol?
Myo-Inositol is the fancy name for regular old Inositol supplements, which can be purchased usually at health food and supplement stores, along with online stores. My favorite right now is iherb.com, but Vitacost.com, and luckyvitamin.com are also great
It is available in powder or capsule form. I take powder form, and just swallow water on top. It is not hard to take, it is a sweet powder! Much easier than swallow tons of pills, and cheaper too.

How do I take Myo-Inositol?
It is recomended to spread your Myo-I into at least 2 doses, and 3 if possible. Take it 45 minutes to 1 hour before eating on an empty stomach Inositol is water soulable, so drink it with water. I just place the sweet powder on my tounge sometimes, and drink down a nice amount of water. The Myo-I just melts in my mouth! As with DCI, Caffiene Kills MYo- Inositol, and also depletes your Inositol stores in your body.
Should I take both Myo-Inositol and D-chiro Inositol or just one of them?
That is your personal choice, of course. They both have similar results in the studies, and they are both from the inositol family. However I think taking both of them could give you the best results? Myo-Inositol has been proven to help with Wieght loss, and D-chiro Inositol helps with Waist-to-hip ratio. So they both have their special things they do. They both help with Ovulation, lowering testosterone, ect. Myo-Inositol has helped my skin, and is proven to help ance and hair growth.
Alot of poeple are just taking D-chiro Inositol with good results, but a few of us take both Myo-I and DCI. Reading the clinical studies might help you make a decision also.
For myself, I take both D-chiro Inositol and Myo-Inositol. I had been on DCI for a few months, and added in the Myo-Inositol recently and I found additional benefits adding Myo-Insoitol to my regime!

Inositol - For PCOS
So I have been reading a lot of blogs and forums about PCOS and what other people are taking, (right now my Dr. has me on Metformin 500 g once a day) and as I am pretty much a modern hippy (ie, I like all natural and organic things whenever possible) I wanted to see what others were doing.
Since I will be on vacation soon and not really to deal with the side effects of Metformin, I am switching over to Inositol for the next couple weeks and see if I can progress in my weight loss and to see if it's side effects are the same/better/worse than Metformins. I plan on take 1,000 to start and increasing it as I go and see how I feel :) I am also drinking more teas, specifically: Red Clover, Chasteberry and Raspberry Leaf. All of which are good for your hormones balancing and whatnot :)
Here's a great article about Inositol (source: http://www.fertilethoughts.com/forums/pcos-diabetes/379227-inositol-pcos-article.html) I highlighted things I thought important in blue

Inositol and PCOS (article)
Inositol may be important for PCOS women for at least three reasons:
* It may aid insulin action and thus reduce insulin resistance.
* It may help to relieve depression, which is common in polycystic ovary syndrome.
* It helps your liver to metabolize fat.
Inositol is a compound that has nine different forms. The most well-known and nutritionally active form is "myo-inositol", which most people simply refer to as "inositol". It is a necessary component of the membranes of your cells and is vital to many biological processes in your body. It is a precursor to a number of essential "signaling molecules" that instruct cells how to behave.
Some of inositol's signaling is related to activation of serotonin receptors, which could relieve depression and improve appetite balance. Serotonin is a brain chemical with several important functions in the body, including mood and appetite regulation.
Inositol is also a fat-solublizing agent that helps to transport fat from the liver. For those overweight PCOS women who may have a problem with fatty liver congestion, inositol can be helpful.
Although inositol is widely thought of as a member of the B-vitamin family, it is technically not a vitamin because the body can manufacture inositol and is not required to get it from the diet.
Where Does Inositol Come From?
Bacteria in your intestines convert the phytic acid found in plant fibers into inositol, so your body is able to manufacture its own supply of inositol. Phytic acid can be found in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts.
You can also obtain dietary inositol from animal foods such as beef heart, beef liver and eggs.
Average dietary intake of inositol is about one gram daily. Dietary intake of inositol can influence the levels of inositol in the body and thus may influence biological activities. Inositol supplements may affect behavior and may have anti-depressant and anti-anxiety activities.
D-Chiro Inositol
Another naturally occurring form of inositol is d-chiro-inositol, which has been found to have activity against insulin resistance. However, d-chiro-inositol is not commercially available either as a drug or as a supplement.
It is found in legumes and especially in buckwheat. Consumption of buckwheat concentrate appears to reduce excessively high blood sugar levels and reduce the excretion of d-chiro-inositol in diabetic rats.(1)
D-Chiro Inositol and PCOS
You may have heard that d-chiro-inositol helps to treat polycystic ovarian syndrome. It is thought that it does this by improving insulin sensitivity.
Recent studies have suggested that women with PCOS may have insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia due to a d-chiro inositol deficiency. D-chiro-inositol has been shown to influence the action of insulin. The amount of chiro-inositol in muscle has been shown to be lower in subjects with type 2 diabetes than in normal people.
A study from the Medical College of Virginia found that 1200 mg. of d-chiro-inositol daily had multiple beneficial effects in the treatment of 22 overweight PCOS women.(2) Not only did it improve the action of insulin, but 86% of the women ovulated during treatment with d-chiro-inositol compared to only 27% in the placebo group. Serum androgen (male hormone) and ovarian androgen production also decreased in the treatment group.
Another study showed similar results in lean PCOS women.(3)
However, there's one big problem: D-chiro-inositol is not commercially available, either as a drug or as a nutritional supplement. (side note, this is now available, you can google it and find it! But it's sorta expensive)
Inositol and PCOS
Since d-chiro inositol is not available, what about ordinary inositol, which is readily available as a nutritional supplement? A recent study suggests that common inositol may be helpful for PCOS and polycystic ovaries.(4)
In this study at the University of Perugia in Italy, 136 PCOS women took inositol (100 mg., twice daily) for 14 weeks. Another group of PCOS women took placebo pills.
The ovulation frequency was significantly higher in the treated group (23%) compared with the placebo (13%). The time in which the first ovulation occurred was significantly shorter (23.6 days) compared with 41.8 days for the placebo group. The number of patients failing to ovulate was higher in the placebo group.
The effect of inositol on follicular maturation was rapid. Also, significant weight loss (and leptin reduction) was recorded in the inositol group, whereas in the placebo group had an increase in weight.
This study suggests a beneficial effect of inositol in improving ovarian function in women with irregular cycles and polycystic ovaries.
Precautions
There are no contraindications for inositol. Inositol supplementation is generally well tolerated. Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea or diarrhea are occasionally reported with high doses. No toxicity has been reported. (Well, I get that anyways with Metformin)
Due to a lack of long-term safety data, inositol should be avoided by pregnant women and nursing mothers. Also, one review article suggested that inositol may stimulate uterine contractions, although no research has demonstrated that inositol actually has this effect.
It's theoretically possible that inositol could worsen hypomanic or manic symptoms of bipolar disorder, so people with this condition should check with their doctor before using supplemental inositol.
Theoretically, high-dose inositol may increase the effects of anti-depressant selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI drugs) such as fluoxetine sertraline, paroxetine, fluvoxamine and citalopram, and with 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonists, such as sumatriptan. If you are taking anti-depressant drugs, consult with your doctor before taking supplemental inositol.
Dosage
According to the study we cited above, PCOS women appeared to get some benefit from a dose of only 200 mg. daily, which is a very moderate amount. Some doctors may recommend 500 mg. twice daily. In contrast, as much as 12 grams (12,000 mg.) has been used in studies to treat depression or panic attacks.
200 - 1,000 mg. per day for PCOS appears to be safe. A considerably higher dose may be appropriate in some situations, but consult with your physician as to how much more you should take. (I have seen other articles and studies where the amount calls for 2,000-4,000 mg. I suggest you do additional research and see what's best for you! )
Inositol is available either in capsules, tablets or in powder form. You can obtain high quality inositol from our PCOS Supplements Store.
